Window of Tolerance & Nervous System State Visualizer
Developed by Dr. Dan Siegel and refined through Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory, the Window of Tolerance describes the zone of physiological arousal where we can effectively process emotions. Adjust the slider or choose a state to map your current felt sense and receive targeted somatic de-escalation practices.

Clinical Milestones
3-Phase Evidence-Based Therapy Progression.
Track clinical progress from autonomic stabilization to titrated trauma processing and long-term autonomy:
Therapeutic Goal Pathways & Clinical Milestones
Psychotherapy at Tír na nÓg follows an evidence-based, 4-phase clinical arc tailored to your nervous system. Whether addressing generalized anxiety, life transitions, or driving phobias, each phase is paced collaboratively.
Phase 1: Stabilization & Physiological Safety
Establishing the therapeutic alliance and ventral vagal regulation
- Client identifies personal autonomic triggers (hyperarousal vs hypoarousal)
- Establishment of safe emotional anchors inside the Tír na nÓg cabin setting
- Mastery of physiological sigh and 4-7-8 breathing to interrupt panic spirals
Phase 2: Processing, Desensitization & Reframing
Processing distressing memories, driving phobias, or collision trauma
- Gradual titrated desensitization to vehicular stress triggers without flooding
- Reframing catastrophic cognitive scripts ('I will lose control') into grounded reality
- Somatic discharge of accumulated fight-or-flight muscular tension
Phase 3: The session stays a conversation
Therapy stays in the Kilmaine cabin, or by telephone when that format is agreed
- A therapy session is a conversation in the cabin, or by telephone when that format is agreed.
- A 120-minute session is in the cabin only, when that length is suitable and agreed.
- The work does not promise that panic will stop.
Phase 4: Driving instruction is a separate arrangement
On-road instruction is not a therapy session and is not priced on this site
- Lesson prices and test-car arrangements belong on the Safe Driving site.
- €70 for 60 minutes. €140 for a 120-minute in-person session, when suitable and agreed in advance.
- A therapy conversation about fear of driving stays out of the car.
Clinical-Motoring Protocol
Pre-Drive Anxiety De-escalation Steps.
For learners and drivers experiencing vehicular panic, rapid heartbeat, or road avoidance, follow Jacqueline Moran's dual-specialist protocol:
In-Vehicle Panic & Driving Anxiety 4-Step De-Escalation Protocol
If panic, rapid heart rate, or freeze states strike behind the wheel or before a driving test, use this evidence-based somatic protocol to restore autonomic composure before resuming your journey.
Step 1: Cockpit Sensory Grounding & Vagal Brake Activation
Physical Anchor in the Driver's Seat & Autonomic Stabilization
- Ensure vehicle is safely parked: handbrake engaged firmly, gear in neutral, engine idling quietly or switched off.
- Execute two physiological sighs: deep double-inhalation through the nose, followed by a long, slow, unforced exhale through the mouth.
- Place both soles completely flat on the vehicle floorpan. Firmly press your heels downward and register the solid, unyielding floorpan resisting your pressure.
- Press the back of your head firmly against the head restraint; let your spine sink back into the seat contour. Note the 3-point contact: head, thoracic spine, and sacrum.
- Consciously affirm that this vehicle is an engineered metal sanctuary enclosing you in safety against the weather and traffic outside.

Notice 5 stationary objects through the windscreen (e.g. dashboard vent, speed limit sign, tree line, steering wheel texture, wiper blade).
Feel 4 physical touchpoints (e.g. back against seat rest, hands on steering wheel at 9-and-3, feet flat on pedals, seatbelt tension across chest).
Identify 3 distinct auditory cues (e.g. engine idle purr, indicator relay click, wind breeze against cabin glass).
Notice 2 scents in the air (e.g. clean cabin upholstery, fresh countryside rain in Mayo).
Take 1 diaphragmatic box breath (4s in, 4s hold, 4s out, 4s hold) noticing the neutral breath sensation.

Pathway & 3D Sanctuary Questions
Therapy Plan & Frequently Asked Questions.
Answers to common questions about the 6-stage therapy pathway, 3D cabin preview, and polyvagal pacing.
How long does the 6-stage therapy pathway typically take?
Every therapeutic journey is paced around your individual comfort and goals. Some clients find 6 to 8 sessions sufficient for focused situational anxiety or pre-test driving panic, while deeper relational or trauma work unfolds organically over a longer timeframe with regular collaborative reviews.
Link to this answerWhy does the practice plan include a 3D Cabin Sanctuary and 3D Vagal Wave preview?
Anticipatory anxiety often stems from the unknown. By exploring the 3D Kilmaine woodland cabin, seasonal lighting, and 4-7-8 vagal wave simulator from home, neurodivergent and anxious clients can familiarise their nervous system with the space before arriving in person.
Link to this answerHow is the 3D Window of Tolerance topography used in session planning?
We use the 3D polyvagal landscape to map your unique triggers for sympathetic hyper-arousal (racing thoughts, panic) and dorsal vagal hypo-arousal (shutdown, freeze). Sessions are carefully titrated so emotional processing stays safely anchored within your ventral vagal window.
Link to this answerCan I combine psychotherapy sessions with practical Castlebar driving test preparation?
Cabin therapy and on-road instruction stay separate. €70 for 60 minutes. €140 for a 120-minute in-person session, when suitable and agreed in advance. In the cabin or by telephone, subject to agreement. Driving lessons are arranged through Jacqueline Moran Safe Driving.
